The staff are dedicated to the students that they are working with which resulted in great programming. Management was also supported of the work that was done and that contributed to the overall positive workplace culture within the Gear Up program. Direct superior is extremely unorganized and conveys information extremely late. Not a reflection of the highest level but enough to warrant a change. It was a very welcoming and friendly environment, that allowed me to show and grow my collaboration, public speaking and creative thinking skills. Gear up is a great company that works into helping kids with their education and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with gear up. The whole management team was awesome and really went out of their way to make sure I felt valued. While there was little to no room for advancement and it was a temporary program on a grant, I was sad to leave. The GEAR UP Grant provided an opportunity to impact students in a way that allowed me to support and grow, not only my students, but myself as well.

after involvement, management is not concerned with keeping employees working. lots of down time and compensation is inadequate. Working with the students one on one was incredibly rewarding in itself. Working with the boss could be frustrating at times. There was a general sense of disorganization and some days I felt like I was doing more work that was beyond the job description. Overall, it was an okay first job, but don't stay there too long. Flexible hours are great, good for college students. Just don't plan on staying there long term. The day started with emails, and prioritizing tasks to be completed for the day. Creating activities for multifaceted problems, engaging students, and creating a collaborative work environment was challenging. Management gave adequate resources to complete tasks and was given space to complete all job duties. I learned that I needed to plant the seed in students minds and allow that seed to blossom at the students pace, not mine. I loved seeing students understand the importance of higher education in any postsecondary dreams and work toward their goals.
